Newer WAD files for Doom 2 require a lot more 'machine' than Dune Nukem 3D ever did. I have both games here and I have ground a (Win 98) Pentium II 300 with 384 meg of ram and a 64 meg video card almost to a halt running some Doom 2 WADs but I never had a problem with Duke 3D even on slower machines with less ram.. To be honest, I always found Duke 3D to run more smoothly with fewer catch-up pauses than Doom2. Probably just a better designed game engine, or at least designed to need to exchange less info via modem to keep up. Now, Quake II was a modem pig..
