Its the license code that is limited. In most cases, the code is now affixed to the side of the case. The problem is you have to get the same media, ie. WinXP, XP_SP1, or XP_SP2, or Win98SE, etc... You can even order the different versions from Microsoft directly. They use to send the disk for free, but I think they are charging shipping now. The copy you get doesn't have the code, you just use the one you should already have. I have each version of the OS on a burned CD, and I just enter the code from the sticker on the side or bottom of the computer. Works like a charm. On some I've had to call MS because the system changed, and they ask why, I say... new Hard Drive, Video Card, Motherboard... whatever... then they rattle off the code I need and I'm on my way. I have about 500 Win98 books after that, any system with Win2K and up, the code is affixed to the system. So, the last part of your statement is totally wrong. You can use anyone's CD, as long as it matches the version you originally had and accepts your code.
