Two things come to mind right off:

* The processor has experienced a thermal event shutdown.  (Overheated)

* The processor is dieing -- these are the same symptoms I had a few years
ago when I had an AMD chip go south on me after it got zapped during a
thunderstorm.  Of course, it could also be your motherboard as well. 

What type of machine is it?  Many manufacturers send a diagnostic disk (CD)
you can run to put all the components through a pretty good stress test.
