Kind of. I mean, originally all default values or auto-detected/whatever were used but (maybe I'm mistaken) I think Microsoft put together some kind of mind-warping work-around to generate IP addresses without DHCP. I call it "mind-warping" because no matter how many times I release and renew the adapters, it stubbornly refuses to generate a realistic IP; it keeps going back to the assigned one. It's very aggravating, because it all LOOKS really simple, but nothing seems to actually do what it appears it should. I've completely ripped the ENTIRE network out, all protocols, all services, all hardware - EVERYthing - and put it in fresh, and it STILL tries to configure itself with ICS-like parameters, though ICS isn't installed (I tinkered with it, but found it needlessly clumsy - very ill-thought-out mrchanism, IMO and took it out again), so it can't complete the DSL re-installation (can't find the devices) and sits completely blind to every attempt at incoming connections. It connects outward just fine, though, apparently no longer needing to log into and register on the network. I dunno... At this point, I've got the 2 computers communicating again and the Win98 box almost manages to connect right through the Win2K box to the internet (detects proxy settings and looks like it's resolving addresses, but no data makes it bak to it), I assume ICS is still hiding somewhere in the setup, partially installed, and causing thebalance of the problems. And reinstalling the OS, just like LAST time this happened, didn't help either, so I'm quite fed-up with the problem.
