Well, you could probably give Linspire a shot. It'd be easier to set up than plain-jane Debian. Since I have never tried it, I am not sure how difficult it is to figure out which Debian branch repositories to point it to, but I am sure there are folks out there who know. When I first got into Linux, I bought a bunch of the $1.98-$2.98 CDs from linuxcentral.com and played around with them. I found that Red Hat, and distros based on it, would not properly identify my video card, and that X therefore would not work. The one exception was Caldera, which was fine. I found I had better luck with Slack, and with Debian-based distros, like Correl. Because Correl had just stopped supporting Linux, I decided to move on. I bought a copy of Libranet Linux, which was then < $30, and set it up. It was easier to set up than most of the other distros, and worked pretty good. It is also Debian based.
