Subj : Grrrrr... To : All From : Belly Date : Mon Apr 11 2005 10:21 pm Anyone have any Maxtor drives? If so, just copy your data off and go ahead and throw 'em in the trash. You'll be happier in the end. I have had to deal with 5 dead drives in the past week or so. All Maxtor. We used to buy them nearly exclusively, until we started seeing a trend in DOAs early last year. Now they're dropping like flies. Three of them in particular really got my goat: An 80GB that I had here that was full of movi^H^H^H^Himportant data, and a matched set in a RAID 1 mirror. Yes, that's right: BOTH drives in the mirror dead...in a small server in an office two states away from me. I googled for the model number of the drives, and got HUNDREDS of hits from data recovery companies. Infamous, I'd say. I even found a nice description of the failure mode on this particular model, relating mainly to sloppy tolerances during assembly, and the fact that the heads idle in the system area... This combination eventually destroys the firmware of the drive. It's not just cheap IDE drives, either... a 10K U320 SCSI Maxtor died not long ago. Color me pissed off. o (O) BeLLy --- þ Synchronet þ **** BraziBBS: bbs.brazi.net **** .
