   I built a Super J several years ago. The plans called for a wooden dowell
   in the center but I ground down a piece of square fiberglass and used 
   that. Yes your right, there an excellant antenna. The wood was the only
   problem with that design. Find a work around for that and you have an
   antenna (barring external damage) that will last forever.
