Subj : OK Back to HAM RADIO Talk To : All From : Spaceman Spiff Date : Wed Apr 13 2005 07:17 pm A bout 10 of the local HAMs out here have decided to all buy these little QRP kit radios called the Rock Mite. The kits cost around $26 plus I think $12 for the connector hardware. We just need to mout the kit into a case of some sort. many of the guys are opting for Altoids Mints tins. While that is anteresting idea, I am thinking of a more professional looking aluminum box. The rigs are available in several frequencies. We all agreed on the Novice CW portion of 80 meters, as several of the HAMs have not achieved General yet and 40 meters Novice 7.100-7.150 can be brutal at night. Both my Ten Tec 544 and Kenwood TS520-SE can do CW, but I wanted to have the fun of building this little QRP rig and see how many contacts I can make with a few miliwatts and a good wire antenna. The little Rig is rock bound to one frequency, though I have heard there are mods for it available on the internet. Apparently it has a small following in the HAM community and a YAHOO user group. At the very least there will 10 other guys in my area I could talk to, :) and brush up on my CW. It is a CW rig, though one of the guys said there are plans to hook up a modulator MOD to it. Any kit builders out here? .
