I don't know the rig, but Google does come up with a number of hits for 
"yaesu VR-5000 control software."  Of course, none of these may be what 
you want.  You say you *don't* want memory management software, but maybe 
that's all that the CAT interface allows with that rig?  I don't know, but 
that's possible.

Long years ago I wrote software to control my Icom rigs via their CI-V 
interface.  But never anything for yaesu rigs (never owned any).  Is the 
specification for the protocol published for that rig?
