Chandler,
The Tech class is not a hard ticket to obtain, but it does require cracking
open a book and learning the basic rules and freqs you would have privilages
on. 

I had a 10 year old kid at a demonstrationof HAM radio I did at a local
education fair. The 10 year old was able to study and pass his Tech class test
in a litle over 2 weeks.

The ARRL and Gordon West both have books that will help you study for the test.
