Subj : QRP kits To : All From : Warlord Date : Wed Dec 15 2004 11:23 pm TenTec makes nice QPR single band kits and there are those QRP Cub monoband kits from MFJ for about 100 dollars. I had looked at all of those awhile back. But if you buy a couple of those it costs you 200 dollars and then you have to have the time to build and test them. A 3-watt CW rig for 20-meters is probably the best choice all around. Always something on 20. Works VERY well at home with a stationary antenna and pretty good in the PLUS not a heavy hitter on power consumption. Probably 1/4 the size of my Icom 703. I went with the 703 because it was a multi-mode radio with up to 10 watts output and had a built in antenna tuner. It also has a built in keyer, DSP, general coverage receive and very low power consumption. And like the 706 it has a remoteable control head. Could be handy if you wanted to operate the radio from a remote location, say away from a room full of noisey computers. For the record I have been useing only my 703 and a Cushcraft R-6000 antenna or a Butternut HF-2V antenna with 9.6 volt NiMi packs (5-watts output). This gives me every band from 80 thru 10 except for 30 meters, CW and SSB. I have never found a single case where I didn't make a contact.
