I started useing an Icom 746 PRO and about 20 watts with a Cushcraft R-6000 at 15 feet fed with 40 feet of LM-400 cable. Worked GREAT. Worked everything that I heard. BTW, this is the HFpack group, mostly pedestrian mobiles and such.. I worked mostly Icom 703's and Yaesu FT-817's. I looked at both of them for months and decided on an Icom 703 because it had the built in tuner and I didnt care about 6, 144 and 440. So I bought one at Jun's Electronics in nearby Culver City, orderded up a couple of R/C car Ni-Mi's (9.6v @ 3000ma) and hooked it all up on the R-6000. The 703 is a 10-watt radio at 12 volts but only puts out 5-watts @ 9.6v but i could hear everything and talk to everything on it that I could with my 746 PRO. I have worked alot of DX on it and made many many new friends and it just ROCKS along on SSB and quite descent on CW even without the optional filter and it does have audio DSP plus a fantastic built in antenna tuner, all for less than 400 dollars. It amazes me sometimes what 400 dollars will buy. 73's Bob KA6HGT --- þ Synchronet þ Highway-99 BBS - 24.130.87.122 .
