Angus, you are a plethora of knowlege.

We were taught in school that the dollar symbol "$" came from the U and the S
written over each other and eventually the bottem of the U was removed.

So that can be added to the list of explanations. I believe I had learned that
in Junior High School during a US History class, though it could have been
Civics class.

I just asked my 14 year old son who is going into High School in a week if he
was taught where the dollar symbol came from, he also said it was from the U
and the S written over eachother.

At least 30 years span of the Pennsylvania Public school system and here is
proof of something consistant.
