It has been suggested that RR brokered a deal for the release of the 
hostages *prior* to the election and arranged for them to REMAIN in 
custody until his presidency began.  If this were true it would actually 
mean that he blocked diplomatic initiatives by the standing president and 
made those people remain in jeopardy longer than necessary.

Also, the fact that he would countenance the transfer of arms to Iran in 
exchange for cash to be used for financing terrorists (Iran-Contra) 
probably doesn't make those same hostages feel all that warm and fuzzy...
