I used to live in Maryland, about halfway between Washington D.C. and
Baltimore.  I now live in Kyoto Japan.

I don't really have to worry about crime here, even though I live in the middle
of the city.  I can even walk to the convenience store at 3am by myself and
have no worries.  You see people here walking away from ATMs counting huge wads
of money making no attempt at hiding their bundle.  Lots of houses, for the
front door, have a flimsy little wooden japanese style sliding number that
would take anyone about 1 second to break into, but you don't have to worry
about that here.
