My old personal page had a custom Google search that integrated it's engine into my site (not even Google in the URL), and it worked quite nicely. You still had the results from Google, but none of the fluff. Actually I just chcekd my old site, and the search is still on there -- http://www.totallynerd.com. I haven't updated it in a LONG time, but I think I have links on there (if they still work) on how to do the Google API's.
