Fidonet isn't as easy as Dovenet to setup, but it's not that difficult 
either.  I'd recommend getting BinkD and using the default binkd config file 
provided by Rob 'docs/binkdex.html'.  It does require finding a mail feed, 
but there's lots of folks who'll hook you up if you ask :)

Once I get mine going I'd be more then willing to help you.. I'm still 
learning now to get binkd up and going, but I'll send you waht worked for 
me.
