Actually it's not as bad to install on Linux as you might think. Rob's instructions are long, but on step 1 you can run a script that sets up most of it for you: -[start paste]---- 1. Get the required installation and source code modules from CVS: A. Create the Synchronet BBS directory on your file system: # mkdir /sbbs B. Change to the Synchronet BBS directory: # cd /sbbs *> Optional Shortcut: *> At this point you can copy the file from this url: *> http://cvs.synchro.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/*checkout*/install/GNUmakefile *> into the Synchronet directory, run "gmake install SYMLINK=1" *> and then skip ahead to step 5. -[end paste]---- From this point read a few pages forward to step 5 and it's just changing some of the zip statements and doing what you'd be doing under Windows. The only disadvantage to using Linux if you're used to Windows is you don't have that fancy GUI screen that shows all the cool stats and stuff, but me personally I run sbbs as a service on a headless computer, so I'd never see this anyway. From my BBS I run ;shell to get to command line and view /var/log/messages to monitor my stats. I also start it as a service instead of just running /sbbs/exec/sbbs, so there's no logged in session to screw with. Quite honestly I think it's simpler on Linux from my experience :) With a fully installed Linux box one could have Sync up and going with Dovenet and some newsgroups in about 30 minutes.
