Now that synchronet has an evolving web interface, that might be one way to garner more interest from the point-and-click crowd. I like telnetting into my bbs from my Linux box because the Linux telnet is raw traditional telnet, and it's a lot nicer than Hyperterm or what ever. I guess what I'm getting to is that even if you don't have users jumping down out of the ceiling to get on, you can still run a board for your own fun and enjoyment.
