I think with awesome programs like Sync it's cake to get a board setup and running with echos in no time. I downloaded Linux in about 2 hours, installed it in 20 minutes, and installed Sync in about another 20 minutes. Total time to setup some newsgroup feeds and Dovenet was maybe 30 minutes if that... so in maybe 3 hours anyone can get a fully functional board up with thousands of messages. Granted this makes a board that looks just like everyone else's board who did the same, but still, it's a full BBS. I think lots of folks go through this but the nostalgia wears off after a few months. I personally setup a BBS with Fidonet and everything around 2001 with Sync on Windows, but the system wasn't stable nor was my broadband connection. The board I have up now I plan on spending some time on, so though it won't be oldschool like some, it should be around for a while.
