The latter.  I'm pretty certain that the turbines rely on the LOH and LOX for
some of their lubrication, and you also have to consider that the cryogenic
fuel is used to cool the combustion chamber and the nozzle.  The exhaust
reaches temperature of over 6000 deg F, so they run the fuel through internal
channels in the nozzle to keep from burning through it.
