The British do not mis-spell.  Since it was the British that *invented* 
spelling, any errors are obviously being made elsewhere.  As for 
pronounciation:

Helium is pronounced
	HE- as in HE, she or it...
	LEE- as in finaLEE...
	UM- as in sUMthing

Ballast is pronounced
	BA- as in BAt...
	LA- as in LAtte...
	ST- as in STing
