And the (for it's day) unique, super-sampled nature of the sound works well too. Apparently they had an LP record of total silence custom-cut, then left it around for a while to get scratched. This was so they could sample 100% authentic 'scratches' for use in their albums. If you like Beth Gibbon's singing, you might like her solo album "Out of Season" which she did a couple years ago in collaboration with Rustin' Man (Paul Webb from "Talk Talk"). It is quite different from Portishead.
