Correct.  From "Dummy".

The song is called "Roads" (see subject).  Don't ask me why.

Beth Gibbons has a very unusual, terrified-of-the-entire-world, sort of 
voice that I can't say I've ever heard elsewhere.  And the (for it's day) 
unique, super-sampled nature of the sound works well too.

Apparently they had an LP record of total silence custom-cut, then left it 
around for a while to get scratched.  This was so they could sample 100% 
authentic 'scratches' for use in their albums.

If you like Beth Gibbon's singing, you might like her solo album "Out of 
Season" which she did a couple years ago in collaboration with Rustin' Man 
(Paul Webb from "Talk Talk").  It is quite different from Portishead.  
None of the big, techno-orchestration, but a more quiet, bluesey, sort of 
sound that makes a good canvas for Gibbons to paint her self-indulgent, 
smokey lyrics upon.
