While my great-grandpa wasn't "glad" my great uncle died in WWII, my great-grandpa was most certainly glad he went to fight, and proud of him for doing it. He was (of course) also glad that my grandpa made it home safe. You're not glad they died, yo're glad they went. At least, that's how it goes if you support the war.
