I need to back Frank on this one.  While my great-grandpa wasn't "glad" my
great uncle died in WWII, my great-grandpa was most certainly glad he went to
fight, and proud of him for doing it.  He was (of course) also glad that my
grandpa made it home safe.

You're not glad they died, yo're glad they went.  At least, that's how it goes
if you support the war.  If you don't support the war, you're proud that he
went, but sad that he went for a purpose that made his life as a warrior a
mockery of all it represents.
