AND 30 or MORE message areas. one bbs had so many 'nets loaded up, it scrolled for 6 or 7 pages...THATS overkill ....overkill so bad it makes people think 'fuck it'. oh, shit..i feel a rant coming on.... a few days ago..i was at work....finally doing what i was always planning to do..but i never got to it..i was scribbling down ideas about what should be added to synchronet... and it came to me.... why the HELL am i doing this? why am i running a bbs again... after having it down so long.. i'm back stronger than ever...but it seems that it's all even worse than i remembered it when i ran it 4 or so years ago publically.. then, even more so... it came to me...why are these other people doing this? what makes a jackass download synchronet, install it, and set it and forget it? why am i running a bbs when there are NO users anymore..except for us sysops.. it's pathetic..we're guests on eachother's boards now. i remember the good old days..when you had to put your fucking HEART into setting up and running a bbs. it was like taking care of a child.. someone would drop carrier in the middle of a lord igm, and you'd have to reboot the fucker.. you'd have to actually hunt down a decent fossil driver that was easy enough to use, and didnt work wacky with your modem. you'd try different types of transfer protocols...remember izmodem people? now it seems like all that's left [i'll say 98%] is the sysops that i used to really look down on..the ones that i didnt understand WHY the hell they were doing what they were doing. The do-nothings. The people that never bothered to TRY to draw ansi like it did... the people that didnt spend MONTHS working on their bbs locally before they put it public. why are we doing it? nostalgia? maybe we're holding on to something that USED to be good.. like sticking with a girlfriend who doesnt love us, and who cheats on us... just because we remember the good old times. people say over and over again that the internet killed bbsing. We killed bbsing.. we are at fault. blame the guys who 'took over' for abandoned bbs softwares. blame people who didnt copy a terminal client on a floppy and hand it to a coworker..and say 'hey, check this out'. but more importantly... we should blame ourselves. we should look into the mirror and look at the lameness that WE are now. sure, i have a very tricked out board..and it could even be MORE tricked out.. not ONE thing on my bbs has not been touched by my hardwork and general love towards my bbs. but it doesnt matter anymore. all this technology doesnt matter anymore. maybe we should all just sit in irc all day and talk about bbsing instead of running one. it's just all so sad... we missed the boat..and it almost makes me want to cry. bbs was such an important thing to me back when i started [what have they called us...'the third wave'? 1994+] out in 1995... i had called other bbses before then..but around this time...calling a local bbs was what helped me to escape the hell that was my life back then. i found people in my town that became my friends, and some of them i met in person, and god, i wish i kept in touch, because those were good people... and i miss them. it's all interesting psychologically...why we keep dragging on with it... are we hanging onto a teddybear or 'blankey' from childhood? why cant we let go? normally, i enjoy people disagreeing with me.. but if you're some ignorant bastard who just writes back with something nasty, you've got a problem buddy.. you need to look in the mirror.
