That makes sense.  Was looking at VMware the other day and they want a tad much 
for a host Linux machine.  Maybe later but don't hold your breath.  ;-)

Saw a couple versions up for grabs on eBay for a reasonable price but they were 
for host MS driven machines.  I personally have no interest in that, no matter 
how cheap.

I've only used djgpp in a DOS enviroment.  It worked fine there but I never 
networked with that box, not even ppp.  It did run a serial based BBS nicely 
though but I honestly think Linux is the best choice for a BBS.
