        I can't blame Trunks for his gutsiness after seeing his sensei get
shredded (Gohan). So I guess at the time, Gohan hadn't reached Trunks' level,
right...?

        Ah, I think I have a better understanding of this now. It was sort of
like a 'Terminator 2' scenario; with Trunks going back in time to try and
find a way to either change the future from which he came (the Androids being
a perfect reference to Skynet and the Terminators) or discover a way to do
something about it when he got back, should the former not be possible. Am I
correct in guessing Trunks hadn't even been born yet in the main timeline?

        Something like war; even as far as global mass murder, can harden a
soul. Trunks would need to be so to do what he did, and be moved to do
something about what happened.
