really I need to impelement a file that holds the last used seiral number
then I can guarantee that the same number isn't used twice unless
there's 4 billion messages that need serial numbers. :)

could get interesting when two copies are running on a multitasking system
but there's ways to handle that too.

That's what I see too, but FTS-1 suggests otherwise.
