If you're only interested in text newsgroups, and don't insist on anonymity, there's the free news server news.cis.dfn.de, information at the web page at the same domain. For binaries and/or anonymity, there are several good pay news services out there, such as SuperNews, Newsfeeds, and Newscene (among others).
