So it's not irrelevant, as you wrote earlier :-)

I use ROBOCOPY from the NT4 Resource Kit here under NT5.00 for that. Very
simple, very powerful. -- I don't know whether it works under Win98.

I also tried CmdSync from FileWare -- doesn't cut it.
