every application I run still sees the same version of MS-DOS as was
running previously.... so how is the version of dos changed? all that is
different is the command-line interface, and the batch interpreter.

It's never seem really tightly integrated to me.

It's still ms-dos (try deleting the other O/S files and see if you can
boot a disk with only 4dos.com on it) any application that does an OS call
to determine the dos version will give the same answer before and after
4dos instalation.

It voids the guarantee on the instalation media?
(that's the only guarantee MS gives)

in any case it's pretty easy to un-alter it back to command.com if there's
a problem you need to report. doing that and re-testing also helps
determine who the problem should be reported to.
