        以下為 Feb 20, 2000 Sunday 美國 ABC 新聞內容摘要, 有誤請指教!

        It's a question that is always perplex us " Is there other
        intelligent life in the universe?"
        In recent years the conventional wisdom has been that there
        are other advanced civilization out there in the vastness of
        space.
        In fact, more than 100 million dollars has been spent on the
        search for extraterrestrial life, known as SETI.
        But now two prominent scientist say we might be alone after
        all.
        In their recently published book, "Rare Earth", they argue
        that our presence in the Cosmos is extremely rare.
        They say that's because the conditions necessary for intelligent
        life, the very special combination of factors, are so complex.
        Their theory could make this famous Bar Scene in Star War,
        seem even more like science fiction.
        ABC's Judy Muller sat down for a conversation with Author and
        Palentologist Dr. Peter Ward.

        經常困擾我們的問題: "有地球以外的智慧生物嗎?"
        目前一般的概念是"有的".
        甚至花費上億美元去尋找它們.
        最近兩位科學家, 出版了一本書, 書名" Rare Earth" "稀有地球"
        他們則認為, 地球, 可能是非常罕有的現象! 因為要誕生生物的
        條件, 是如此復雜!
        記者訪問作者, 也是古生物學家 Dr Peter Ward :

        Ward:
        I guess? the roles in 86 for those characters in the Star WAr
        Bar scene. They're out here.
        We just don't think such diversity could exist.
        The Universe is really vast. But nevertheless, all the indication
        from Earth suggest that ... is really rare.
        星際大戰的景象, 在我這兒是不存在的! 宇宙雖大, 但是, 以目前的
        所知而言, 要有很多有智慧生物聚在一塊兒, 是不太可能的.

        Q: Doesn't there a list of things happening for life exists?
        A: We need certainly a planet that has water, our Sun could
           constantly for energy, for so long , that we has a planet
           that hasn't had the water either evaporated away or freeze.
           We need a planet that is not going to have a star that go
           supernova in crisent?
           We need a planet hat has time. That's most important, long
           period of time. Evolution takes time.
        問:誕生生命要甚麼條件?
        答:要有水的行星, 要有太陽能長久地供給能量, 行星的水不能馬上蒸散
           或是結冰, 太陽也不能一會兒就以超新星爆掉了!
           長時間是很重要的, 因為演化要一段很長的時間.

        Q: Why doesn't such elements exist in another place?
        A: The Univers is huge. We're not saying that it doesn't exist
           elsewhere. We're saying is that, I think, How may out there
           , is vastly exaggerated.
        問:為何這些條件, 別的地方沒有?
        答:宇宙是極大的, 沒錯! 我們不是說沒有, 只是說, 它存在的機率被誇
           大了!

        Q: Carl Sagan once estimated that there could be as a million
           other alien life forms out there. Was he just completely
           taking a guess or Does he have evidence?
        A: Sagan has evidence. He has good evidence. But since of him,
           huge amount of informatio has come forward.
           The recognition that we need a planet such that our Jupiter
           could screen us or escort us from bombardment, from meteorite
           bombardment.
           Sagan didn't know that.
           That fact that our Moon stabilize our planet against climate
           change.
           Sagan didn't know that.
        問:沙岡曾估計, 宇宙至少有上百萬以上的智慧生物; 他是瞎猜的呢?
           還是有確實證據呢?
        答:沙岡是有證據, 他有好的證據; 但是, 從他之後, 更有太多的新資料,
           比如, 沙岡不知道, 木星的重要性; 我們要個木星那樣質量的行星,
           在外抵擋隕石的撞擊; 沙岡也不知道月亮的重要性, 我們要月亮來
           穩定我們的氣候!

        Q: ... Jupiters out there?
        A: There're many Jupiters. That every one of those, so called
           "Bad Jupiters". They have highly eccentric orbit. They push
           planet, such as ours, either into the stars or thrown out of
           space.
           No one has yet seen a good "Jupiter" other that ours, one has
           a very stable orbit.
        問:難道別的地方找不到木星嗎?
        答:找到的木星是很多, 不過, 都是那些稱做"壞木星"一類的, 它們的
           軌道偏心率大, 會把像我們這樣的行星, 拉出軌道, 或拋到星際之間
           去! 目前, 還沒找到一個, 像我們這樣有穩定軌道的木星.

        Q: What you're saying is that Earth is geographically desirable?
        A: Well, like the grail? of real estate --" Location, Location,
           Location!"
        問:那您是說, 我們頗得"地利"囉?
        答:嗯..., 就如房地產的術語吧!---重要的是"地點, 地點, 第三還是地點!"

        Q: What's in the reaction, of those invested in the search for
           intelligent life form or any other forms of life in the
           universe, hundreds of millions of Dollars?
        A: The only ... we got is from the SETI group. For sceintist
           who study exobiology with us, had all said: " Shoo! Finally
           somebody has finally said it!"
           So, what if you like, I told you my dirty old secret.
           Yes, we're wishful life's out there.
           We're not that hopeful.
        問:那些投資上億的人, 對您的說辭, 有何反應?
        答:跟我一齊研究"地外生物"的科學家們, 都說: "哇! 總算有人說出來了"
           告訴妳, 我心裡藏了很久的秘密; 是的, 雖然我們希望能找到"地外
           智慧", 但是, 我們並不怎麼抱著太大希望!

        Q: If we're all there is...If we're alone here?
        A: If we're .."place?" ...animal life, it really raises the stake.
           What we do internally, has a huge repercussion galactically!
           If we are one of many, who care if we tressure our planet.
           If we are one of one, it changes things.
        問:如果..這宇宙只有我們..., 如果我們真的這麼孤單呢?
        答:如果我們是僅有的生物, 那麼我們所作所為的冒險性就大大增加了!
           我們在此地球上的行為, 將影響到整個宇宙, 不是嗎?
           如果,我們只是許多中的一個, 我們也許不會珍惜我們的地球;
           如果,我們是僅有的一個, 一切都不一樣了!
