In more than 40 years of practice, she has observed that mothers in western society frequently withdraw nurturing contact from their male children, falsely assuming that in order to "make a man out of him", mothers must distance themselves from their sons. This loss of maternal affection can be traumatic, and is frequently internalized by young boys as rejection. The widespre ad practice of maternal withdrawal may contribute to many undesirable characteristics and emotional problems frequently exhibited by men in our culture, chief among them being emotional aloofness. Olga Silverstein visited KPFA in April where this interview with Marianne Wahoshi was recorded. Produced by Cathy Chapman. 8:15 Falling off the Map Travel stories, indiscreet journeys, and essays on that "long desire" that makes us leave home.
