   To amend title 10, United States Code, to index for inflation the 
  amount of the death gratuity paid upon the death of a member of the 
                      Armed Forces on active duty.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. INDEXING OF AMOUNT OF DEATH GRATUITY FOR MEMBERS OF ARMED 
              FORCES DYING ON ACTIVE DUTY.

    Section 1478 of title 10, United States Code, is amended--
            (1) in subsection (a), by inserting ``, as increased from 
        time to time under subsection (c)'' before the period at the 
        end of the first sentence; and
            (2) by adding at the end the following new subsection:
    ``(c)(1) Whenever there is an increase in retired and retainer pay 
under section 1401a of this title, the amount in effect under 
subsection (a) shall be increased by the same percentage as the 
percentage of that increase, effective on the effective date of that 
increase and applicable with respect to deaths on or after the 
effective date of that increase.
    ``(2) The amount under subsection (a) as increased at any time 
under paragraph (1) shall be rounded to the nearest $100.''.
