TEACHER'S CORNER "HEALTHY SCHOOLS! HEALTHY KIDS!" Most health threats to children fall into six groups: * Tobacco use * Unbalanced nutrition * Insufficient physical activity * Risky sexual behaviors * Alcohol and drug use * Behaviors that result in injury In collaboration with state government, local communities, and families with school age children, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) envisions addressing these health threats by strengthening seven school-based services and integrating them into "comprehensive school health programs." The services include: * Health education * Health services * Physical education and activity * Nutrition services * Counseling, psychological, and social services * Health promotion for staff * School environment In 1994 the Rhode Island Departments of Education and Health jointly received one of only 13 grants from the CDC for this purpose. The grant is called "Healthy Schools! Healthy Kids!" Grant funds are intended to reorganize government resources for the support of comprehensive school health programs in communities throughout Rhode Island. With community partners from all around the State, the Departments of Education and Health have drafted a statewide plan for the reorganization. The draft plan will be disseminated for additional public feedback in the Summer of 1996. Look for it! Read it! Comment on it! Become part of "Healthy Schools! Healthy Kids!" .
