The Institute has held a number of international conferences: (A) The International Symposium on the Co-ordination of Chinese Economic Systems, held on 20-22 January 1992, was organised by CEWS, the Hong Kong Society of Asia and Pacific 21 Ltd, the Democracy Foundation (Taiwan) and co-sponsored by the Asia and World Institute and Hong Kong Foundation. It explored the possibility of co-ordination of the Chinese economic systems. Approximately 100 delegates from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Macau and the USA attended, and over 57 papers were presented. (B) An International Conference/Workshop on Pre-School Education was held on 20-26 March 1993. The Conference was organised by CEWS, the School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University and the China International Children's Centre, Hainan, China. The purpose of the Conference was to provide a venue where serious consideration could be given to developments in the provision of early childhood services. (C) The International Conference on the Future of Economic Co-operation Between the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan was the second phase of the conference held in January 1992. It was organised by CEWS, the United Daily News (Taiwan), the China Global Public Relations Company (China), and the Institute of International Relations Studies (University of South Carolina). It was held on 8-12 September 1993 in Beijing with delegates from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the USA. (D) An International Confernece on Developments in Continuing Education: An East-West Perspective, jointly organised by CEWS and the School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University, was held on 25- 27 November 1993. It was attended by over 50 participants from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, England, and the USA. (E) International Seminar on Mainland China's regional development on 24-25 March 1995, in co-sponsorship with the National Taiwan University (F) An Inaugural Conference of LEWI was held on Nov 6-8, 1995, on the changing role of universities in national and regional development. Speakers came from 22 member institutions of LEWI. The conference was attended by well over 80 people from ten countries. (G) An International Conference on Elderly Care, the Family, and Human Values in the 21st Century was held on 8-10 February 1996 in Co-sponsorship with Chung Chi College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Division of Social Science of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. 21 papers were presented by international scholars from USA, UK, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. (H) An occasional lunch seminar on "Hong Kong Public Opinion on the Transition to SAR" will be held on 13 March 1996 (Wednesday) and the speaker of the seminar is Dr. Michael E. DeGolyer, Associate Professor of Department of Government and International Studies. (I) An occasional lunch seminar on "Outlook of the China-Hong Kong Economic Relations" will be held on 28 March 1996 (Thursday) and the speaker of the seminar is Dr. Tsang Shu Ki, Associate Professor of Department of Economics. .
