Ask Candid Candice a question about Moo Canada:
What is WAIS?
WAIS (Wide Area Information Server)
is a client/server based program that allows full text searches
of documents. Document types include Usenet news articles, text
files, hypertext pages, or even GIFs. WAIS was the first search engine on
the Internet that searched for material inside files, and not just their
file names or directory names. WAIS servers accept search requests
forwarded to them by gopher clients and thus provides a previously missing
link in the ability to find and retrieve information on the Internet.
Of-course WAIS has been made largely obsolete by search engines like AltaVista which can index the
entire Internet, and not just one or two sites.
