A DNS server is required if you want to host your own Domain Name.  
Because it is free (and because people don't like to pay for software 
that performs unglamerous jobs), this DNS server software is used by 
the majority of name serving machines on the Internet.  

Caution: Even for experts, BIND is difficult to configure correctly.  
If you can spend the money, I highly recommend using "Simple DNS Plus"
as your DNS server, due to its outstanding stability, performance and 
extreme ease of configuration.
