Wed Dec 10 01:42:11 CST 2003 Just saw Hal3000 linked at SiMpLe MaChinEs... Daisy , Dasiy it's and upgrade for me :) That song incidentally was the first song ever played on a computer at Bell Labs (the original version not the hal3000 gopher theme song ;) ) Added -nolist on lynx dumps also testing |grep -A 99 Current on NZSP after the rest of the lynx dump line. In case anyone is wondering how hal3000 was chosen..... In 1997 shortly before the Mars Pathfinder landed (7/4/97) I decided to see what computers were about, I was 34 at the time. A complete custom rack and system was scrapped at a company I work for, my forklift driver asked if he could take it back out of the dumpster, I said sure, and helped him yank it back out. It kind of interested me and when he later said he was selling it at a garage sale I ended buying it from him. 286-20, 2meg ram, external 14.4 modem, vga monitor keyboard, 60 meg HD, custom box (1/8" steel box with big pull handles). It needed a name and a couple years earlier I got in trouble for renameing a z80/eeprom based controller from CMR-1000 to HAL-2000 , hal2000 ran a plastics extrusion machine and its scanner. This box ran another machines scanner. So in keeping with "my" naming scheme it was dubbed HAL-3000. Since then the name became, my alt and then my domain. By the way after a bit I learned how to get into BBS's and after the phone bill got higher, got an isp, moved up to dos 6.22 and procom+ found DVPEG and those images of the rover sojourner downloaded to the isp from lynx and then kermit to my box...wow! With a 286 and no gui I was seeing mars nearly first hand! Shelling into the solaris box showed me what could be done...I had to get my own *nix box... Anyhow 6 short years later and the win95 weanies who laughed at me for wanting to start my computer experiance back from closer to its pc beginings now ask me for accounts and they still depend on M$. 12-15 Boxen on the home lan now at any given time, I think I heat my house in mhz. No I am no hack, I aspire to be one some day though. All the kids out there , man , they sure got it over me...I wish in school we had computers...ohh well like a vw bug in the indy 500 I keep puttin along between all the day to day drivel. :) Hack: To manage successfully. Later! O
