I tried NNTP a few days ago (Mystic A47) and the experience was interesting.

I found Thunderbird mostly worked, although occasionally it appeared to 
disconnect and Thunderbird got confused (started pulling up empty articles).  
Restarting Thunderbird fixed it - until the next time.

Pan was a non-starter - I don't remember exactly, but I think it failed to 
retrieve the groups.

tin didn't play nicely.  Again, I can't recall exactly what the issue was.

slrn looked promising, and mostly worked, but never saw new messages.

I haven't retried with Mystic A48.

I took a look at this but success has been limited so far.  Where I tripped up 
was the Mystic display codes require a two digit number, so saying "Fill until 
column 131" doesn't work.  I can probably re-work things to not rely on those 
display codes - haven't had a chance to try that yet (I was hoping the simple 
approach would work, lol).

I was trying to tweak the indexed message reader - is that what you did?
