Subj : What's the hype with Proxmox? To : Arelor From : hyjinx Date : Wed Sep 24 2025 21:22:56 Ar> That is pretty much it. For most home deployments I am sure you can setup Ar> KVM/Qemu and do pretty much the same thing much of the time. I'm a fan of what Proxmox does. Basically it replaces ESXi, but as you say 'for home deployments'...it may actually be overkill. Especially if I want to have the speed of bare metal for one operating system at home, right? Say I wanted to have a Windows 11 or Linux desktop with full access to an NVIDIA graphics card for doing ... graphicsy things, I probably wouldn't want to use proxmox on that machine, right? I'd just run Win11 or Linux as the host on that machine normally and then run KVM/QEMU/VirtualBox or even VMWare now that it's free for home use. Given the plethora of options there, say I was running Linux as the host on a 'home friendly' distro like POP!_OS or Ubuntu etc. What would be your choice of Virtualisation host, and why? - I.e. out of KVM/QEMU/VB and VMWare (or others if there are others). I ask, as over the years, I've found that KVM & QEMU have been good for grunt but not as easy to use as Virtualbox/VMWare Desktop, and VMWare is pretty powerful, but the cost was the inhibiting factor. So, what would be the go these days, if all I wanted to do was fire up a few Windows & Linux boxes for futzing around with?
