Multitasking isn't the problem.  If your getting unwanted pop-ups/ notifications, you need to determine the source and if it's comeing from a site/program your using, you can usually turn most, if not all, of them off.  Otherwise, your system might be compromised in some way.

As for BBSing, use a terminal program that allows you to go full screen; I use SyncTERM, which does this.  So far, I've not been interrupted by outside content.
