I watched it too, years ago, and I enjoyed it.  I feel like the pacing was better, making it easier to keep interest (2001, while good, had slow pacing at times).

And I think it's interesting now to see what older sci-fi books (and movies) predicted for the future - most often they're over-optimistic.  I wasn't born until later, but it seems like interest in space exploration was big in the late 60s (due to the moon landing), and I imagine people assumed it would continue that way.
