I have always pulled the hard drive and saved it when discarding dead pcs. If I cannot fix it that is. I have a hard drive reader to look at drives of any type. If the sectors are good I will use it or back it up on the replacement pc. Then destroy it if all else fails. I have files and data going back to 1986… I am regular with my backup policy.
