I had a rather detailed military type map covering a wall when I lived in West Germany, and would put a dot on each small town I visited, usually doing a Volksmarch.  

When visitors commented on the map, the reason for th dots was varied a bit though, depending on if the visitor was gulible  and/or anoying.
