In college, friends of mine moved into an old victorian flat in San Francisco - back then, most of the rentals in central SF were old victorian flats in various states of repair. They had a housewarming party and asked people to bring maps. I didn't understand, until I came back the week afterwards and they'd covered all of the dingy, stained walls in the living room with maps, interwoven. It looked very cool. In retrospect, nowadays, in a rent-controlled world, I'd buy a 5 gallon can of satin white paint, rent a carpet shampooer, and DIY - and not tell the landlord. I knew so many people who made waves waiting for landlords to clean places, when picking up and finding a new place was always more expensive. Better and cheaper to make your space comfortable and eat the cost, I'd think now. Not to mention the fact that when you do move, it's sometimes a struggle to get your security deposit back. Showing the place looking better than when you move in and having the landlord try to deduct repairs/cleaning would be entertaining!
