It seems to me that since intelligent life developed here, it could develop elsewhere too.  I'm not sure we really know the probability of intelligent life developing, but I've heard of the Drake equation, where even with conservative estimates, the universe is so huge and there are so many planets and solar systems etc. that we haven't even discovered, that it seems there still could be a good chance that there is intelligent life somewhere else in the universe.
