MSFS 5.0 was a significant upgrade for graphics.  It was 4.0 that had the more basic squares and triangles, but with 5.0, it started to use textures and shading to make things look a bit more realistic - still cartoony by today's standards, but things were at least solid objects with more detail and shading.

That's an idea, if you actually want to come over and see it some time, as we're both in the Portland area.  :)

I was able to download MSFS 2024 last night (it sounds like a lot of people have had problems with that), and I was able to run it for a few minutes (I didn't have a whole lot of time).  I think it looks great so far, and the video was very smooth - it seems to run better than MSFS 2020 (I may have to check the graphics settings though).
