Try putting this in the password field in the /etc/shadow file:

    $y$j9T$7FOBvVykAYTWGfCHpB2tJ.$/cOEl5X64TU2daBOxeP.hfgF90h23GeLBxFmJI0TVP4

(that’s a hash for “raspberry”.)
