I had the same problem with hptutil corrupting message bases when linking &
packing with that utility. Instead I link with 'hpt link -j' and pack with
'sqpack "*"' (despite the name, sqpack can pack both jam & squish message
bases).

I don't sort messages either.  I've noticed that I'll sometimes receive a reply before receiving the original message, but not often.  Like Nick, I'll just display messages in the order they're received.
